Conquering curves, continued!

This will be the last of the 'Curves' posts for a while, but I wanted to share the final project that I made from Rachel's Curves Class: The Orange Peel Pillow.

P1110123

This project came with a warning about its trickiness, so I approached it cautiously, making sure that I cut each piece individually and accurately. This time round we were told to pin all the curves, which took forever, but I can see why it was needed. Achieving accuracy was definitely tricky. I didn't unpick any of my sewing, but you can see below that I missed the mark slightly in a couple of places.

I decided, as I didn't have any interfacing, to use a really thin batting and quilted around the edge of the outside orange peels, as well as a few invisible stitches right in the center.

I used the focus fabric for the back and installed a hidden zipper. I think the back is nearly as pretty as the front!

This was a time consuming project, but one where I can happily see the progress I have made in sewing curves. There are more projects from the class that I really want to make, but they will have to wait a while.

  1. It looks great! I really like how the pillow looks like you are looking out through a fancy decorative window into a beautiful garden.

  3. I was wondering how you sewed down the petals. Are they hand sewn? They look perfect!

  5. This pillow was a great way to highlight that main floral -- love it! And I really like how you used four different fabrics for the center orange peels. If I tackle a second, I think I'll follow your lead with the center color choices ...

  8. you made a great job of this. I have done this class too and am mid way through the Wheel quilt. This pillow is on my to do list but I think I will wait for winter in July (I am in NZ) before I tackle it! I am impressed with your results and your choice of fabrics is so pretty and delicate

  9. Beautiful cushion. I love the projects on the curves class but haven't had the chance much to get anything finished. Really like that dark purple and the backing fabric is gorgeous!

  10. This pillow is beautiful! The purples and blues are so pretty together! I do like the look of curves but my lazy self prefers them kind of wonky because I don't have the patience for all that pinning. I haven't seen any other curves classes projects so I do hope you share more when you get the time!!!

  17. I love the focus fabric you chose. With this project under your belt, you could make a double wedding ring next! :) I made mine by machine and can vouch for the pin lots and pin often advice.
